South Africa Aims To Host The 2036 Olympics, Becomes Indonesia's Competitor

JAKARTA South Africa proposed to start a long-line discussion with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding hosting the Olympics in 2036.

The IOC on Wednesday last week (20 November 2024) has received a South African delegation at the Olympic Building in Lausanne and welcomed the proposal.

The delegation consisted of South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, South African National Olympic Committee (SASCOC) President Barry Total, and CEO Nozipho Jafta.

"The IOC welcomes this interest and a joint commitment from the SASCOC, the South African Government, and support from IOC Members and Honorary Members in South Africa," said IOC President Thomas Bach, on the official website.

The proposal received strong support from South African IOC Members, Anant Singh, and IOC Honorary Members, Sam Ramsamy, who also participated in the meeting.

Initial consultations regarding the new project have begun between a team from South Africa and the IOC team led by the President Director of the Future Olympics, TRUEline Barrett.

"We are at the start of an exciting new process that could bring South Africa to host the 2036 Olympics," said South African Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie.

Regarding the host of the 2036 Olympics, Indonesia also received an offer and there is a possibility of participating in the bidding.

The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) of the Republic of Indonesia, Dito Ariotedjo, in early October 2024 said the offer was delivered directly by Thomas Bach when he met President Prabowo Subianto on the sidelines of holding the 2024 Paris Olympics.

However, to this day Indonesia has not taken any steps. If you participate in the bidding, Indonesia will compete with South Africa and maybe Qatar too.
