Thomas Tuchel Becomes Manager Of The England National Team, Starting On Duty January 1, 2025

JAKARTA - Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has been appointed to handle the England national team. Tuchel, who took charge on January 1, 2025, became the third foreign manager or from outside England afterung Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Tuchel, who is originally from Germany, is not actually a foreign figure with English football. He once interpreted Chelsea as replacing Frank Lampard in January 2021.

Tuchel immediately achieved success by bringing Chelsea to win the Champions League after defeating Manchester City. What Tuchel couldn't do at Paris Saint-Germain was ambitions to win a wide-eared trophy.

Only Tuchel's tenure at Stamford Bridge is short. Chelsea then fired him in May 2022. Right when Tuchel played his 100th match with the Blues.

However, this has become a reference for the FA to appoint Tuchel. Yes, this 51-year-old man has always been one of the candidates to replace Gareth Southgate who took office after bringing England to the Euro 2024 final.

The push for the national team to be handled again by managers from outside England such as the Eriksson (Sweden) and Capello (Italy) eras made the FA prepare a list of coaches from various countries, including Mauricio Pochettino (Argentina) and Pep Guardiola (Spain).

Apart from candidates from outside the UK there are local products like Graham Potter and Harry Redknapp.

Pochettino's figure was quickly crossed out and was difficult to enter the national team because of the sentiment of English football and Argentina. The FA also tends to choose Guardiola who achieved success with Manchester City over Tuchel. It's just that Guardiola seemed repulsive even though he didn't give a definite answer.

FA finally chose Tuchel, who was previously unemployed after leaving Bayern Munich without a single trophy last season. The process of appointing the former Borussia Dortmund coach was brief and a little surprising. Moreover, previously, Tuchel had been targeted by Manchester United.

Even the news of Tuchel's recruitment is getting more and more widespread following the deteriorating performance of manager Erik ten Hag. The club, through Sir Jim Radcliffe, has also had talks with Tuchel.

Unfortunately, the negotiations seem to have failed, opening up opportunities for the FA to attract Tuchel. Because the federation has received pressure to immediately return interim manager Lee Carsley as manager of the U-21 national team.

While dealing with the senior national team for the time being, Carsley made a blunder strategy that led to the Three Lions' embarrassing 2-1 defeat at home to Greece in the UEFA Nations League. This is England's first defeat to Greece over the past 40 years.

According to the Mirror, the FA negotiations with Tuchel took place quite briefly. Both sides reached an agreement on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 evening local time. Tuchel received a 18-month contract to deal with Britain. Only, he will only be on duty at the start of the new year.

This means Carsley will still be in charge of Harry Kane et al in two Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland next month. The FA will also officially announce Tuchel's appointment as Britain's new manager this Wednesday.

Tuchel is actually a coach full of achievements at the club. He built a reputation as a cold-handed coach when he replaced Juergen Klopp at German Bundesliga club Mainz in 2009. Klopp then joined Borussia Dortmund.

The coach, known for his aggressive football style, then, again, replaced Klopp who left Dortmund in 2015. He also succeeded in bringing Die Borussen to win the German DFB-Pocal in 2017.

Only if Klopp then moves to the English Premier League by dealing with Liverpool, Tuchel chose Ligue 1 France and coached Paris Saint-Germain replacing Unai Emery.

Together with PSG, he won Ligue 1 two seasons in a row 2019 and 2020. He brought the French giants to the 2020 Champions League final before being defeated by Bayern Munich.

When recruited by Chelsea, Tuchel instead led him to win the Champions League trophy for the second time. But Tuchel did not last long and was dismissed.

However, he actually achieved success when he returned to the Bundesliga by winning Bayern. He won the 2023 league title even though Tuchel left Bayern the following season.

Only Tuchel's recruitment as the manager of the England national team received strong criticism from Reknapp. According to this senior manager, Tuchel was not the right choice because he was less successful in managing the club. He was also too quick to be dismissed as a coach.

"He lost his job so quickly, he was also not very successful. He came and quickly went to various clubs," said Redknapp, who was only able to win the FA Cup, bringing Portsmouth to the Premier League by winning the Championship. Redknapp also only won the 1999 Intertoto Cup for West Ham United.
