Shevchenko Matches The COVID-19 Pandemic To The Chernobyl Disaster

JAKARTA - Former AC Milan and Chelsea forward Andriy Shevchenko said the COVID-19 pandemic or the corona virus is similar to the Chernobyl disaster.

More than 30,800 people have died from the coronavirus, with the number of cases worldwide exceeding 660,000.

Shevchenko saw the gloom between the corona virus pandemic and the Chernobyl disaster. The incident that occurred in 1986 killed 54 people instantly and caused thousands of further deaths.

"I was living in a moment very similar to this. At that time, I was nine years old," the Ukraine coach told Sky Sport. Reported by Soccerway, Monday, March 30.

"The only thing we have to do is avoid stupid behavior. Neither of us can be sure that we don't catch this virus.

"We can't go out (the house), we can't just think about ourselves, but also especially (have to think about) the people who have the infection, because it will be a bigger problem."

Shevchenko thanked the doctors and nurses and urged everyone to respect the advice of their government.

Italy, where Shevchenko played with AC Milan from 1999-2006, has suffered more than 10,000 deaths from the coronavirus.

"The only solution is to respect government rules - which is to stay at home and give doctors the opportunity to do their job," he said.

"Give them volunteer nurses, they are the heroes of our time. We have to thank them for all they did."
