Luis Suarez's Tears When He Announced His Retirement From The Uruguay National Team

JAKARTA - Luis Suarez could not hold back tears in a press conference with the Uruguayan national team on Monday, September 2, 2024.

The press conference was originally to inform the results of La Celeste's trial against Guatemala which ended 1-1.

However, Suarez apparently took advantage of the moment to say goodbye. Sobbing and sobbing, the Inter Miami player announced his retirement from the Uruguay national team after 17 years together.

The 37-year-old striker revealed that the match against Paraguay (7 September 2024) in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers as his final party was in the La Celeste uniform.

Suarez promised to play in his last match with the same enthusiasm as when he first played for Uruguay in 2007.

"I went with calm of mind that I have given everything for the national team until Friday (7 September 2024). I have no regrets."

"There is no better pride for yourself than knowing when it is the right time to retire. Luckily I am sure that I am retiring from the national team because I want to resign," said Suarez.

The former Liverpool player on the one hand is happy to be able to Buntu shoes from the Uruguay national team in his own way, not due to injury.

"I am 37 years old. I know that it is very difficult to reach the next World Cup. I am very entertained because I can retire not due to injury or stop being called up by the national team."

"It really helps to take steps and I feel ready even though it's difficult because the decision is not easy."

"However, I stepped with calm of mind. Until the last game, I had given everything. The fire was not extinguished slowly. That's why I made the decision that it should happen now," said the former Barcelona mainstay.

Luis Suarez has played in four World Cups and won the Copa America in 2011 when he was named the Best Player.

Most recently, Marcelo Bielsa's team was third in the 2024 Copa America. In fact, before the tournament, Suarez wanted to take home the 2024 Copa America trophy.

If you really win the 2024 Copa America trophy, Suarez plans to retire from Uruguay with the euphoria of champions.

However, what is the power, the plan failed to implement. However, Suarez is still grateful that he was able to contribute one goal in the 2024 Copa America which he scored in third place.

Suarez finally decided to hang up his boots from the national team during the Uruguay home match against Paraguay in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers at Centenario Stadium, Montevideo, Friday, September 7, 2024.

"My dream is for my kids to see me win something important with the national team. The last goal was very fun for them even though it wasn't a trophy to take home. It was very fun for them."

"I want to show other people that I can continue to contribute to the national team."

"I've won the Copa America and I can do it perfectly after that."

"However, after analyzing the situation, I wanted to do it with those closest to me, in my stadium."

"I want my children to experience this. Saying goodbye to the people here (Uruguay) is something I don't know if many have done it or not," said Suarez.

Luis Suarez has scored 69 goals in 142 games over 17 years with Uruguay. The record made him La Celeste's top scorer.

Suarez made his senior debut for Uruguay on February 8, 2007 in a 3-1 win against Colombia. However, he was expelled in the 85th minute after receiving a second yellow card.

Meanwhile, Suarez said that he would continue to play in Inter Miami alongside former Barca team-mate Lionel Messi.

He revealed that the Major League Soccer club will be the last team in his football career.
