Officially, Mason Greenwood In The Marseille Uniform

JAKARTA - Mason Greenwood's career at Manchester United has officially ended. The 22-year-old has been introduced as a new player Olympique de Marseille.

Greenwood landed in France on July 18, 2024 local time. He has signed a contract until 2029 in a deal worth more than 30 million pounds, just before Manchester United announced the arrival of Leny Yoro from Lille for 52 million pounds.

Manchester United has released a brief statement confirming Mason Greenwood's transfer to Marseille.

The British striker was proposed with an initial tag of 27 million pounds plus 3.2 million pounds.

The Red Devils also have a sales clause of 50 percent included in the package.

"Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on permanent transfer status."

"The 22-year-old British striker, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for Manchester United since making his debut in 2019."

"We wish Mason all the best in his future career," read Manchester United's statement.

Greenwood will wear the number 10 at Marseille.

The success of Greenwood's transfer means that Marseille officials did not heed the protests from supporters.

Previously, it was known that Marseille supporters threw a wave of protests against Greenwood's presence. They campaigned for the hashtag #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

In fact, the Mayor of Marseille, Benoit Payan, participated in opposing Greenwood's presence. He publicly rejected the move and would lobby Marseille's President, Pablo Longoria, to cancel it.

However, that didn't happen in fact. Greenwood has officially uniformed Marseille for the next five years.

Meanwhile, the rejection of Greenwood could not be separated from cases off the field. He was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 for cases of rape, assault, and control and coercion against a woman.

Nine months after the suspension was handed down, Greenwood was charged by the court. He denied the charges and in the end all criminal charges were dropped in February 2023.

Greenwood was then loaned to Getafe in the 2023/2024 season. There, he was able to restore his performance by appearing in 33 matches and scoring eight goals and six assists.

This slick appearance made him targeted by a number of European clubs. However, only Marseille was finally serious about negotiating.

Despite receiving many rejections, many parties also support Greenwood's presence. In fact, the player was greeted by a number of supporters when he landed at Marseille Airport.

Roberto De Zerbi, Marseille's new manager, is also one of the people who will defend Greenwood.
