Reconsidering Organizing The 2020 Tokyo Olympics Due To The COVID-19 Pandemic

President of the IOC Committee, Thomas Bach, said that maintaining the health of all parties involved in the 2020 Olympics is a principle thing. "Therefore we make it our main principle to maintain the health of everyone involved, and contribute to controlling the virus," said Bach.

The consideration of continuing or postponing the 2020 Olympics is not an easy matter. On the one hand, there is a growing interest from Japanese citizens to welcome the Olympics. It is predicted that the formulation of this scenario will be completed in four weeks.

Although the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Committee still gives hope that the Olympics will continue, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the option to postpone it was possible. According to Shinzo, the condition of the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak makes it difficult to guarantee the safety of large sports such as the Tokyo Olympics.

"If the IOC in its decision can be interpreted as being impossible to hold the Olympics in full form, as I said earlier, then the decisions that have to be made might postpone it," Nikkei quoted Abe as saying.

Even so, Abe said, canceling the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was not included in the options from the results of the scenario determination meeting.
