Portugal 2024 MotoGP Sprint Race Results: Vinales Wins, Marquez Runner-up

Maverick Vinales won the 2024 Portuguese MotoGP Sprint Race (Instagram/@maverick12official).

JAKARTA - Maverick Vinales, a Aprilia racer, won the 2024 Portugal MotoGP Sprint Race at the Portimao Circuit, Portugal, on Saturday, March 23, 2024.

Marc Marquez, a Gresini Racing racer, managed to secure second place. The last one, aka third place, was secured by Pramac Ducati rider, Jorge Martin.

While the 2023 MotoGP champion, Francesco Bagnaia, failed the podium. Ducati Lenovo's rider only finished fourth.

In fact, Bagnaia was in second place following Jack Miller who led the race on the first lap.

They competed with Vinales, Marquez, Enea Bastianini, Jorge Martin, Brad Binder, Aleix Espargaro, Alex Rins, and Pedro Alcohol in the front group.

Bagnaia even had time to lead the race after overtaking Miller at the last corner before entering the third lap

He then got a fierce duel with Marquez who followed him in second place. The Gresini Racing rider managed to overtake Vinales and Miller to make a distance of 0.5 seconds from Bagnaia.

When Marquez fought for second place with Vinales, Bagnaia took the opportunity to widen the gap.

Meanwhile, the second place is getting more and more interesting. Vinales was able to displace Marquez who made a mistake at Turn 6 on the sixth lap.

Jorge Martin also took advantage of the negligence and took third place from Marquez.

On the eighth lap, a disaster came. When Bagnaia was comfortable away from Vinales' pursuit, he lost control at Turn 1.

The 2023 MotoGP champion went wide to the exit of the track. Vinales, Marquez, and Martin then took advantage of the situation. As a result, Bagnaia had to be eliminated to fourth position.

Next, a hot duel occurred between Marquez and Martin who wanted to control the second podium. On the final lap, the Gresini Racing rider managed to overtake Martin.

The result earned Vinales an additional 12 points. While Marquez and Martin packed nine and seven points.

The unfortunate fate of four riders. Fabio Di Giannantonio, Johann Zarco, Alex Rins, and even Brad Binder who had entered the front group had to fail to finish.
