JAKARTA - Real Madrid fell victim to the next surprise in the Copa del Rey after being eliminated in the last 32 due to a 1-2 defeat against third-tier Alcoyano at El Collao Stadium, Alcoy, Spain, Wednesday local time (Thursday WIB).

Real Madrid suffered an unfortunate exit after failing to maintain the narrow lead that was achieved thanks to Eder Militao's goal and then conceded in extra time despite Alcoyano only remaining 10 players on the pitch, according to the official RFEF website notes quoted by Antara.

Resting most of the main players, Real actually appeared quite in control of the match and almost took the lead when Federico Valverde's shot was pushed over by goalkeeper Jose Juan in the 14th minute.

Los Blancos' dominance finally paid off when Militao broke the deadlock just at the end of the first half with a header from a Marcelo cross.

Lucas Vazquez nearly doubled the lead nine minutes into the second half, but his long-range shot was cleared by Jose Juan.

Eager to lock in early wins, Zinedine Zidane fielded Karim Benzema to replace Mariano Diaz in the 67th minute but Real Madrid were still struggling to find a second goal.

In the 78th minute, Jose Juan made another brilliant save out of the box to keep out a threat from Vinicius Junior who failed to beat the third-tier goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation.

Just two minutes after wasting a golden opportunity, Vinicius made a mistake when he failed to keep Jose Solbes close at the far post in a corner.

As a result, Solbes had room to slip Ramon Lopez's header to send Alcoyano level 1-1 in the 80th minute.

Two minutes from normal time, Real Madrid players demanded a penalty when Militao missed an acrobatic shot and claimed Angel Lopez was fouled, but referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez ignored the demand.

The 1-1 score lasted until normal time was over and both teams continued to the extra round. Realizing the threat of an embarrassing moment, Zidane sent Eden Hazard and Toni Kroos to replace Alvaro Odriozola and Isco in the hope of changing things.

However, what happened again was Jose Juan showing off brilliant saves to block Marco Asensio's curling shot in the 103rd minute.

In the 110th minute, Real Madrid took a big advantage when Ramon Lopez received a second yellow card for a late tackle on Casemiro, forcing Alcoyano to finish with 10 men.

Two minutes later, Jose Juan returned to save Alcoyano's goal when he reacted quickly to block Marcelo's shot from the edge of the area.

Instead of locking up the win, Real Madrid conceded in the 115th minute when Alcoyano's quick counter-attack was ended by attacking midfielder Juanan who cheated on Ali Diakite to outwit goalkeeper Andriy Lunin and make it 2-1 for the hosts.

After that, Alcoyano fought tooth and nail to keep their lead, including through Solbes, who threw himself up to block a Valverde shot in the 122nd minute to lock his side into the last 16.

Real Madrid became the second La Liga club to be sent off by Alcoyano from the Copa del Rey after Huesca in the second round.

Real Madrid joins Celta Vigo, Getafe and Atletico Madrid who are the victims of the surprise Copa del Rey this season.
