JAKARTA - Didier Deschamps made Zinedine Zidane bite his finger. Zidane's hopes of training the French national team were dashed again.

Deschamps stated that he would continue to coach Les Bleus until the 2026 World Cup.

Deschamps' contract period has actually ended after Qatar's 2022 World Cup. In that tournament, France failed to defend the title after losing on penalties to Argentina in the final.

According to a report, French Football Federation (FFF) President Noel Le Graet initially only wanted to give Deschamps a two-year contract extension until the 2024 European Cup.

But the coach insisted on staying in charge of the French national team until the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

"I will announce something that for me is a great joy. The president has decided to extend (my contract) until 2026," Deschamps said at the FFF general hearing, as quoted by Antara via AFP, Saturday, January 7.

"I thank the president for his continuous support and trust in me. The French national team must go well," he continued.

Previously, Zidane really hoped to fill the position of coach of the French national team if Deschamps did not continue his contract.

Now, the former Real Madrid coach is most likely receiving a proposal from the Brazilian national team who is looking for a new coach after being left by Tite.
