JAKARTA - FIFA announced the cancellation of the 2021 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia due to the COVID-19 pandemic and also canceled the U-17 World Cup which was scheduled to be held in Peru.

However, Indonesia will continue to host the U-20 World Cup in 2023.

"As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FIFA board decided to cancel the men's FIFA U-20 World Cup and men's FIFA U-17 World Cup 2021," said a FIFA statement reported by Antara, Thursday, December 24.

"Indonesia and Peru, which will each host the tournament in 2021 will continue to host the 2023 edition."

FIFA stated that the COVID-19 pandemic is still a challenge for the implementation of sports events and the current difficult conditions will have an impact on international travel restrictions.

Therefore, FIFA consistently continues to consult with relevant stakeholders, including the host member associations as well as the football confederations involved in the two tournaments.

"FIFA would like to thank the host member association, as well as the authorities in Indonesia and Peru for the commitments and preparations made so far," wrote FIFA.

"FIFA hopes to continue to work with the host country to organize a successful tournament."
