JAKARTA — United States journalist Grant Wahl passed away while covering Argentina's match against the Netherlands in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday morning at the Lusail Stadium.
Wahl was reported to have fainted during the extra time and his life could not be saved. He is thought to have died from acute pressure.
Before he died Wahl had time to tweet on Twitter at 02.35 am local time. His tweet reads, 'only set-piece goals planned extraordinary by the Dutch'.
He also previously had time to tell about his health condition which recently worsened through the media where he worked, Substack. "My body was eventually damaged. Three weeks of lack of sleep, high stress and a lot of work," he wrote, quoted by One India.
Wahl further confirmed that he contracted the COVID-19 virus because he did routine tests while in Qatar. However, he is thought to have bronchitis after going to the clinic.
"They gave me antibiotics and good cough prescriptions, and I felt a little better a few hours later. But still: nothing has changed," he said further.
"What was previously the flu for the last 10 days turned into something even worse on the night of the Dutch United States match, and I could feel the upper chest I was under pressure and discomfort," he added.
Wahl was previously a writer in sports media Sports FIRSTed before moving to the Substack online publishing platform. Wahl has covered eight football world trophies to date.
While in Qatar he was detained by security officers for wearing a rainbow colored t-shirt as a symbol of support for the LGBT community during matches between the United States and Wales.
