JAKARTA Pubs and bars across the UK refuse to air Qatar's 2022 World Cup matches. This is a form of protest over the bad record of the human rights of the host country against the LGBT community.
In a recent report written by the Daily Star, several pubs and bars in the UK have pledged to create'safe space' in their place by not broadcasting World Cup matches
One of the bars that took the stand was John Sizzle's The Glory, 54, which is based in London. The bar decided not to air Qatar World Cup because of the request of some fans.
"It is very disappointing that human rights have not been considered when holding an event of this magnitude," he said as quoted by the Daily Star, Thursday, November 17, 2022.
"It's very problematic. We're showing the women's European Cup here because it's really a big party, but we don't want to make money from this World Cup," he added.
A similar step was also taken by Nicola Moxham who runs Mustard Pot in Leeds. This place will usually be watching with some fans when England appear in international events.
Nicola has even sold tickets to show the World Cup, but changed her mind after her customers expressed their concerns.
"I started investigating a little deeper and realized that it was a hassle for a lot of people. So, we considered it and decided not to broadcast it," he said.
The four-year most prestigious competition will start on Sunday, November 20. However, the biggest football event has already become a controversy because Qatar is considered unfriendly to the LGBT community and has a poor human rights record.
