JAKARTA - Atalanta was fined 12,000 euros (approximately Rp. 18.2 billion) after their fans directed a "territorial attack" song to Fiorentinacurinecurrency Commisso.

As reported by Antara from AFP, Wednesday, Serie A said that the northern club was fined for singing mocking Commisso from Italy in their team's 1-0 win over Fiorentina on Saturday.

Fiorentina has described the chant as racism and could not possibly be satisfied with the fine as they demanded "tight punishment" for the "devassive episode".

"It's not only the league that has to interfere but also the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) and the government," Fiorentina general manager Joe Barone said in a statement.

Commisso, 72, was born in Calabria in Italy, but when he was a child moved to New York City, where he eventually became an American citizen and a wealthy media figure.

In Italy, the chant of the southerners -- known as "territorial discrimination" -- is considered as serious as racial abuse of blacks because of the history of discrimination against those in the richer north of Italy such as Bergamo where Atalanta resides.

The most common target for this chant is Napoli, the largest and most well-known club in southern Italy.

In August, Fiorentina was fined 15,000 euros due to a chant asking Mount hotspots, which is so popular with football fans and even ending up on Spotify's music streaming service.
