2022 BWF World Championships Schedule, Sunday: Opportunities For Hendra/Ahsan For Fourth Title Rebut

JAKARTA - Indonesian men's doubles Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan have the opportunity to win the fourth title of the BWF World Championships against Malaysian representatives Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik in the final at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Japan, Sunday.

It became the 11th meeting between the two pairs, with a winning record still held by Hendra/Ahsan 7-3. Unfortunately, the 2013, 2015 and 2019 world champions lost in the last two meetings.

Quoted from Antara, the pair nicknamed The Daddies had to lose to Aaron/Soh in the bronze medal match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open 2022. At that time, Hendra/Ahsan both suffered a rubber game defeat.

However, Hendra/Ahsan did not worry too much about the record for the meeting. The world number three pair said they were ready to serve Aaron/Soh with the strategy prepared.

Hendra Setiawan expressed that the motivation and determination he had in the World Championships was higher than when he competed in the usual tournament. The 38-year-old badminton player even often conveyed his target of winning the fourth world title with Ahsan since last year.

On several occasions, when asked about his defeat in a tournament, Hendra often replied that he was targeting to win a title in the World Championships.

The Daddies actually had the opportunity to add to their fourth collection of titles at the World Championships in Spain last year. However, this ambition had to be delayed after the PBSI federation decided to withdraw the participation of all Indonesian athletes from the tournament.

Hendra/Ahsan also determined to win their fourth world title this year to add to their record titles that have been won at the 2013, 2015 and 2019 World Championships.

"Aaron/Soh have a strong defense and the condition of the ball here is slow, so we have to be more patient. It can't be hit or attack once or attack can kill the opponent," said Hendra.

During the couple, Hendra/Ahsan had never lost in all the matches they played in the World Championships. Apart from being with Ahsan, Hendra has also won the world with the late Markis Kido in 2017.

Hendra/Ahsan have not yet tasted the highest podium of the BWF badminton tournament so far this season. Their best achievement is runners-up in All England 2022 and runners-up Malaysia Masters 2022.

Likewise with Aaron/Soh who also have not won any title this season. The 2022 World Championship Final is the second final for them after the 2022 Asian Badminton Championships when both have to settle for runner-up status.
