Former Real Madrid Midfielder Fernando Gago Retires Due To Injury

JAKARTA - Former Real Madrid and Boca Juniors player Fernando Gago has ended his playing career after suffering a series of serious injuries.

Gago, who is now 34 years old, has also played for AS Roma and Valencia and is currently registered at Buenos Aires club Velez Sarsfield.

"We are missing a very important player. The decision has been made," Velez coach Pablo Cavallero said, announcing the news to local radio stations as quoted by Antara, Wednesday, November 11.

Gago, who occupies the position of defensive midfielder, suffered severe damage to his Achilles tendon three times, while the tendon in his knee was also damaged twice.

He won two La Liga titles with Real Madrid and played for the Argentine national team at the 2014 World Cup and the 2008 Olympics.

Gago enjoys his role as a midfielder who serves as a playmaker in front of defense, due to his intelligence and ability to dictate play in midfield with his passes. He played this role both at club level and the Argentine national team.

After arriving in Europe in 2006, Gago was compared to compatriot and former Real Madrid player Fernando Redondo for his ability to build up the game and destroy opponents' attacks, allowing him to contribute both offensively and defensively.

During his time at Real Madrid, Gago was described as a very dynamic footballer who predicted his play on the movement of the ball. He is also able to reach the opponent's penalty box, has incredible vision and knows how to protect the ball.
