JAKARTA - Gennady Golovkin said Canelo Alvarez's defeat to Dmitry Bivol was clear evidence for the Mexican boxer.
It is known that Canelo lost to Bivol by unanimous decision in May and that was something of a shock to the boxing world.
Golovkin was supposed to be in Las Vegas and ringside in the fight, but ultimately decided against going to Sin City.
He didn't even watch the fight at all. And that he admitted before his third bout against Canelo on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"I've seen some footage from some of the fights, but I don't follow Alvarez or think about it. He's not on my radar," Golovkin told BoxingScene.com.
"I know a lot of people didn't believe me but I didn't watch it live or after. I saw the trailer. No surprises for me. Bivol is Bivol. Canelo is Canelo. It was a good day for Bivol and it was not a good day for Alvarez .
Grinning and winking, Golovkin said: "Bivol is good."
When Golovkin was asked if Canelo's jump to the 175-pound category and ultimately beat Bivol was a good idea, the Kazakh boxer joked about his rival's love of golf.
"I refrain from commenting on whether it was a good or bad decision. There are experts who have shared their opinion on it. For me, it doesn't really matter. He did what he wanted to do," said Golovkin.
"Participating in a golf tournament was a good idea. It was something he had to do. Jumping through the heavyweights, I don't know."
