German Legend Gerd Muller Is Dying At A Nursing Home

JAKARTA - German and Bayern Munich football legend, Gerd Muller, who turns 75 on November 3, is now lying stiff in a nursing home bed towards the end of his life, said his wife Uschi Müller.

"He was always a warrior, always brave all his life. Even now he is. Gerd is sleeping on his deathbed," Uschi Muller said in an interview with the German daily Bild reported by Antara, Wednesday, November 4.

According to Uschi, Gerd Muller "slept before his death" because he suffered from Alzheimer's disease which caused the legend to experience memory loss.

Uschi tells about Muller's old days spent with Alzheimer's disease, which has long suffered this 1970 Ballon d'Or-winning footballer.

As a result of the disease that gnawed at him, Muller is now unable to communicate with those around him.

"He's been in bed most of the day. Sometimes he's awake too."

"It's so beautiful when she opens her eyes. Sometimes she can show yes or no by moving her lashes. She is calm and peaceful, I don't think she is suffering, she goes slowly to the afterlife while she sleeps," said Uschi who every day visits her husband in nursing home.

Uschi said he would try to talk to her "in slow and clear words" and watch TV with her on her birthday.

Nicknamed the "Bomber of the country", Muller scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga games. He still holds the record for goals scored in one season with 40 goals. He also scored 68 goals in 62 games for West Germany, winning the European Championship in 1972 and the World Cup in 1974.

In fact, the head coach of Bayern Munich, Hansi Flick said that the legendary German national team bomber, Gerd Muller, is the best striker in the history of football, above Pele or Diego Maradona.

"In my childhood, he was the greatest striker, because he scored goals with a quality that is no longer available today. Maybe Lewandowski is the only one who still has some of (Muller's great skill)," said Hansi Flick as in an interview. with AZ.

In the span of his football career, Gerd Muller scored 515 goals in just 576 matches in all competitions for Bayern Munich.

Only Pele (Santos, 643 goals) and Lionel Messi (Barcelona, ​​636 goals) have scored more goals for one club in their careers.

Muller still holds the status of the Bundesliga's top scorer in one season, when he scored 40 goals in the 1971/72 season.

He also contributed 68 goals in only 62 matches for the (West) Germany national team, including one goal in the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands.
