JAKARTA - Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya criticized Canelo Alvarez's promoter Eddie Hearn for dueling the 31-year-old boxer and Dmitry Bivol.

De La Hoya questioned Hearn's risky decision to push Canelo up from middleweight to light heavyweight to take on the Russian.

"It was a lose-lose situation for everyone. Nobody knew Bivol at all," De La Hoya told The MMA Hour quoted Friday.

“I would promote Bivol to [make him] a bigger name because no one knew who he was before he played Canelo. He's irrelevant, he's a nobody.

"Canelo now has a [Hearn] promoter who clearly doesn't come from boxing.

"He doesn't really understand boxing. He made Canelo lose, that's clearly not right. Canelo is a boxing superstar today. Eddie Hearn was unfair to Canelo when he faced him against Bivol.

"[Hearn] makes a lot of fights that mean nothing, especially here in the US. He may be a good promoter in England and he builds European fighters but that means nothing here in the US."

In a fight that took place last month in Las Vegas, Bivol took advantage of his height and reach to beat Canelo unanimously.
