JAKARTA - Canelo Alvarez was once under the auspices of Oscar De La Hoya's company, Golden Boy Promotions. This duo has become the topic of discussion for many parties. But now they have separated.
While the reasons behind the 2020 split remains unclear, De La Hoya opened up about the matter while speaking with MMAFightingonSBN.
"It's a long, long, long story," he said.
"You know, there are certain strengths and players against us at Golden Boy.
"I mean, we have many, many enemies, man. I've fought the left and the right."
While the 49-year-old did not give specifics about what led to the split, he hinted at disagreements over promotion issues.
"Promoting is a tough business and, when they want to bring you down, it's a tough business," says De La Hoya.
"I really can't go into detail about what really happened, but you know it was a very unfortunate situation for us."
Canelo eventually sued DAZN and its former promoters, including De La Hoya, for breach of contract.
Despite the legal process, De La Hoya has stated on more than one occasion that he would like to work with Canelo again in the future.
