JAKARTA - Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss has revealed that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has given him the opportunity to make an offer for the ownership of the London club.
Wyss lives in the United States and has a net worth of £4.36 billion (Rp83.56 trillion). He confirmed Abramovich had approached him.
"Like all oligarchs, he panicked," Wyss told Swiss newspaper Blick.
"Abramovich is trying to sell all his villas in England. He also wants to get rid of Chelsea immediately. Me and three others received offers on Tuesday to buy Chelsea from Abramovich," he continued.
"I have to wait four to five days now. Abramovich is asking too much at the moment. You know, Chelsea owe him £2bn."
Wyss admitted that he did not know the selling price of the Chelsea club. Originally, he wanted to be a Chelsea partner first and had to look at the condition of the club as a whole.
"But what I've said, I definitely don't do anything like that. If I buy Chelsea, then with a consortium of six to seven investors."
In the past, the likes of US businessman Todd Boehly and Ineos chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe have reportedly tried to buy the club nicknamed the Blues.
So far, Chelsea have not responded to recent claims that Abramovich is preparing to sell the club.
As previously reported, Abramovich is no longer in charge of Chelsea due to criticism from British citizens regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
He handed over the management of the club that owns the two Champions League trophies to the club's internal charities.
Abramovich is known to have a close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
