JAKARTA – Valentino Rossi announced that he would participate in the European GT World Challenge (GTWCE) car race. He will appear in ten series with the W Racing Team (WRT).
Rossi himself gave certainty through his Twitter account on Thursday, January 13. The MotoGP retiree will appear with the Audi manufacturer's flagship squad with his iconic number #46.
"I'm excited to join Team WRT for the full European Fanatec GT World Challenge program supported by the AWS program. Everyone knows that I'm a big fan of auto racing and I've always been interested in racing on four wheels after my career in MotoGP is over," said Rossi as quoted from the MotoGP site.
The nine-time world champion ended his MotoGP journey in mid-November. After hanging up his helmet at the most prestigious motorcycle event, the Italian racer immediately announced that he would be looking for a new challenge.
He then went on to test with WRT in December and reached an agreement to drop 10 rounds at GTWCE.
"Now I am devoting myself to the auto racing program at a high level and with the right professional approach. The WRT team is the most suitable team that I am looking for. I can't wait to have an adventure in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe," said Rossi.
WRT is the world champion team in the LMP2 class at the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Next year, Indonesian racer Sean Gelael is confirmed to strengthen WRT to defend the title.
In GTWCE history, the WRT team was recorded as the most successful team. Since 2011, they have won a total of 28 team and rider titles.
The 2022 GTWCE Sprint Race will take place at Misano on 1-3 July. The Endurance Cup races will be held at Imola on April 1-3 and the 24 Hours of Spa on July 28-31.
