Lewis Hamilton Fans Create Petition Rejecting 2021 Race Results, Reach 40 Thousand Signatures

JAKARTA - The Formula 1 (F1) season is over, but the pros and cons of winning the championship still continue. It was later discovered that Lewis Hamilton's supporters made a petition denying Max Verstappen's victory at the end of this season.

Reporting from Marca, Friday, December 31, the refusal petition contained that the title of Verstappen was replaced by Lewis Hamilton. From the same source also mentioned, until this news was published, the petition has been signed by more than 40 thousand people through cyberspace.

Looking back a little. Hamilton and Verstappen actually collected the same number of points towards the end of the season. Because of that, the championship title was determined in the last series, in Abu Dhabi.

While on the track, Hamilton actually led most of the race. But the accident of the Williams driver, Nicholas Latifi, made the safety car enter for the last few laps.

Red Bull decided to pit in their bid to give Verstappen the lead over Hamilton. After Hamilton returned to the track, there were several cars wedged between the two drivers.

Race director Michael Masi let these cars overtake so Verstappen went straight to head to head with Hamilton with one lap remaining. Verstappen, who excelled in conditions, managed to pass the Mercedes driver before the finish to ensure the title.

This led to Mercedes' initiative to appeal Verstappen's win, but they ultimately decided against it.

But the dissatisfaction seems to still be felt by Hamilton's fans and hopes the result is not validated. They considered Masi's decision to violate the rules and harm Hamilton.

Not only fans, a number of racers and former world racers were divided into two camps. Some supported Hamilton, others considered Verstappen's victory valid because of the official decision of the racing director who has the authority to make decisions from certain situations during the race.
