JAKARTA - Inter Milan and AC Milan designed a joint stadium that will be designed by Populous who is the architect who successfully built the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in England.
The two top Italian clubs have revealed what their new home base will look like in what will be called The Cathedral, the new stadium located in the same San Siro district in Milan as their current stadium and officially called the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
Milan and Inter said in a joint statement that the design of the new stadium was inspired by the world famous Duomo Gallery and Vittorio Emmanuele.
They didn't reveal the capacity of the proposed new stadium but the design from Populous shows an image of a pitch with spectators close to the pitch.
Quoted by Antara from the Italian media, the seats are no more than 65,000, a significant reduction from the current San Siro, and the first matches should be played there from 2027.
The wider project will include more than 110,000 square meters of green space with sports and recreational facilities "free of charge or affiliated with the City of Milan".
Both clubs have announced their design choices after Milan's city council last month confirmed the "public interest" of the project.
The vote came after mayor Giuseppe Sala won a second term in local elections last October.
Defending Italian champions Inter Milan and seven-time European champions AC Milan said they would now "present the final project for the next stage in 2022" after making adjustments to the city's planning regulations.
The San Siro is currently one of the most iconic arenas of the game, dubbed "La Scala football" but its future is uncertain.
The new stadium will host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics, and Sala said last Monday "if anyone wants to rent the Meazza then I am ready to work with them".
