JAKARTA - The Vietnam SEA Games committee announced that 40 sports will be competed in the biennial multi-sport event which will be held on 12-23 May 2022.

This was based on the results of the virtual meeting of the South East Asia Games Federation (SEAGF) with the national Olympic committees of ASEAN member countries, Tuesday.

Secretary General of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) Ferry J Kono said after the confirmation his party would immediately discuss with the Athlete Commission to discuss the readiness of sports and the number of athletes to be sent.

Ferry emphasized that KOI would be fully considerate in sending athletes to the SEA Games. He also explained that KOI was very vocal in the selection of sports to be played at the SEA Games later, starting from the reasons for the selection as well as references to the recognition of sports affiliated with international sports federations.

“There are a number of branches that we question because we still have to prioritize the interests of Indonesia. However, the SEAGF Charter does explain that the mandatory branches at the SEA Games are only aquatic and athletics, so from the beginning KOI has always emphasized that the SEA Games is only an intermediate target," Ferry explained, launching Antara.

The SEAGF Charter regulates the branch program for the SEA Games, which must compete in a minimum of 22 branches from three categories. First, athletics and swimming as mandatory branches.

The second category is a minimum of 14 branches which are competed in the Olympics and in the Asian Games. Third, other branches that contain elements of local Southeast Asian sports preservation, at least eight.

During the meeting, KOI also questioned the host's readiness to deal with Covid-19 cases during the largest multi-event in Southeast Asia. According to Ferry, the Vietnam SEA Games Organizing Committee is committed to conducting regular daily tests, using saliva and PCR methods.

The Vietnam SEA Games organizing committee will also ask the contingents of each country to prepare medical documents and proof of vaccination for all athletes, coaches and related officials.

“Tests during the games time of the SEA Games in Hanoi are borne by the organizing committee. But the test before departure is the responsibility of the state NOC. Meanwhile, treatment related to old injuries is covered by insurance prepared by each NOC," he said.
