JAKARTA - Great Wall Motors (GWM) continues to strengthen its position in the international market. Most recently, the Chinese automotive manufacturer has announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, with an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles.
Citing the Carnewschina website, Friday, February 27, the announcement was revealed a few days ago during a meeting between local government officials and GWM executives.
The new plant will be located in the Barra do Riacho area of the Aracruz Industrial Park, covering an area of around 1.7 million square meters. According to Rogério Salume, Development Secretary for the state of Espírito Santo, that facility will feature a complete production line including stamping, welding, painting, and assembly operations, making it GWM's most advanced plant in America.
The project is expected to create between 1,500 and 3,500 jobs during the construction phase, mainly in the construction sector. Once operational, the plant can generate up to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs, boost the regional economy and support the development of automotive supply chains and service industries.
This announcement follows a January visit to China by Espírito Santo's Vice Governor Ricardo Ferraço, who met with GWM executives and signed an investment commitment agreement.
Ricardo Bastos, Director of Institutional Affairs of GWM, emphasized that the decision to build in Espírito Santo was the result of a national evaluation of potential locations.
Previously, GWM's local production in Brazil began in August 2021 when the company acquired the Mercedes-Benz plant in Iracemápolis, São Paulo state, through an asset deal. This initial facility, which officially began operations in August 2025, is GWM's third largest global manufacturing center with an initial annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles.
The plant can produce hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and diesel vehicles on the same production line, with the initial models produced locally including the Haval H6 GT, Haval H9, and GWM Cannon 2.4T pickup truck (Poer).
