JAKARTA - The large SUV from BYD, Denza B8, managed to get a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). This result confirms the vehicle's ability to protect in various testing scenarios.

In the domestic market, the model is marketed under the name Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 8 (Bao 8). Denza B8 launched in the Chinese market in November 2024 as FCB Leopard 8 with a starting price of 379,800 yuan or around 54,970 US dollars.

The car is designed as a large-sized off-road vehicle with a length of 5.2 meters, a ground clearance of up to 310 mm, and a plug-in hybrid system that produces a combined peak power of 550 kW (738 hp) in China.

Later, the Denza B8 can also be ordered in Australia with a choice of six and seven-seat interior configurations. In the ANCAP test, the highest score was achieved in the Child Passenger Protection aspect with a value of 95 percent.

Protection is considered solid during the frontal offset and side collision tests. However, some points were trimmed because of the absence of a top tether on the third row seat, so the installation of a child safety system in that row is not recommended.

Meanwhile, Adult Passenger Protection scored 86 percent. The driver's neck and chest protection was deemed adequate during a full frontal impact, but its performance decreased in the oblique pole impact test.

In the Vulnerable Road User category, the Denza B8 obtained a score of 75 percent, influenced by varying results in the area of the windshield pillar, the windshield base, and the front edge of the engine hood, with pelvic protection that was mostly rated as poor.

Launching from ANCAP's official website, Tuesday, February 24, Denza B8 bagged a score of 78 percent in the Safety Assist segment. The AEB system showed a fairly consistent performance, but the vehicle has not intervened when the driver is detected to be distracted, exhausted, or unresponsive.

In addition, the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system also has not met the ANCAP test standards. Technically, the Denza B8 carries a box SUV design with a body-on-frame construction.

Its dimensions are recorded at 5,195 mm long, 1,994 mm wide, and 1,905 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm. For the Australian market, the Denza B8 uses a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 145 kW (194 hp) power combined with two electric motors with 200 kW (268 hp) and 300 kW (402 hp), producing a combined system output of 425 kW (570 hp).

The Denza B8 is also equipped with a 36.8 kWh capacity LFP Blade battery and a 91-liter fuel tank. The combined mileage is claimed to reach 1,040 km based on the NEDC cycle. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be completed in 4.8 seconds, while the load pulling ability reaches 3,500 kg.
