JAKARTA - The Hyundai Group has always been known for its expertise in presenting fast and fun cars to drive. However, their decision to confirm the production of the Genesis Magma GT has sparked a surprise.
The next challenge is clear, ensuring that this Genesis' first supercar is not just a momentary final project, but a long-term foundation for the brand's performance identity. As reported by Carscoops, Friday, February 20.
At the end of last year, the manufacturer announced a major push towards performance. The launch of the Genesis GV60 Magma was the initial signal, as well as an affirmation that every Genesis product line will have a high-performance Magma variant at the top.
Among all of them, the Magma GT is projected to be the flagship model.
In a recent interview with the British Car Magazine, Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) President and CEO José Muñoz and designer Luc Donckerwolke revealed the big direction they wanted to take.
The vision is clearly referring to the footprint of established performance brands such as BMW, AMG, and Lamborghini. This means that this target goes far beyond simply attaching the Genesis badge to other products within the group.
"The Genesis vehicle is completely different [from Hyundai and Kia models]. The platform is different, the technology is different, and the performance is different," said Munoz.
The statement confirms Genesis' position as a separate entity, while the Magma GT is said to bring that differentiation to a more extreme level. The initial engineering process for the production version is also underway.
Internal sources estimate that this car has the opportunity to be present before 2030, marking Genesis' mid-term commitment in the high-performance segment. This approach suggests a sustainable strategy, similar to the way Nissan has maximized the potential of the GT-R for years.
"You launch a base car, then make S, GT3, and roadster versions. Then you do a massive refresh in the middle of the car's life cycle and repeat it again. It's not rocket science," said Donckerwolke.
Genesis is also said to want to bring the Magma GT to the racing arena, with early indications pointing to homologation for the GT3 class, with plans to sell units to private teams. This program will be under the command of Hyundai Motorsport boss Cyril Abiteboul - a former senior Renault and Alpine Formula 1 team, which gives a strong credibility to Genesis' motorsport ambitions.
Success on the track is believed to open up huge commercial opportunities, as Lamborghini and other exotic car manufacturers enjoy. If the plan goes smoothly, Genesis has the opportunity to reap similar profits through its racing reputation.
Interestingly, Donckerwolke also gave a signal of the possibility of a limited edition Magma model. This strategy is commonly used by Ferrari, McLaren, to Lamborghini: refreshing the look, a little change in specifications, a new name, then limited production with a premium price tag.
"These cars are very easy to implement quickly and with minimal initial investment," he said.
This means that if Genesis decides to give the green light, the realization can take place quickly without risking the stability of the company. "I strongly believe in the principle of no monoculture of cars," added Donckerwolke.
