JAKARTA - Honda wants to prove that adventures in the open air do not always need large vehicles such as trucks or bulky SUVs. The Japanese manufacturer introduced Base Station, a compact camping trailer designed to be pulled by a vehicle as small as a Honda CR-V.

Honda said that after the journey is complete, the Base Station is compact enough to be stored in a garage or a standard residential parking area. This concept makes the running home feel more realistic for daily users, without the need for a giant-sized towing vehicle.

Visually, the Base Station at first glance reminds of a futuristic-style modern trailer in a mini size. This trailer was developed by the same team that previously worked on the Motocompacto electric scooter, with a collaboration of research and development teams in California and Ohio.

Launching Motor1, Thursday, January 15, the Base Station is paired with the Honda Series 0 SUV as a towing vehicle, emphasizing the minimalist design language it carries. For flexibility, the Base Station has large side windows that can be completely removed so that various accessories can be installed.

In addition, there is a pop-up roof that makes the cabin space have a standing height of up to 2.1 meters, so it is still comfortable when used. Access to the cabin is through a large rear door that is hinged at the top.

Once inside, this trailer is claimed to be able to accommodate up to four people. Honda has installed a futon-style sofa that can be expanded into a queen-size bed, complete with a bunk bed for children. Interestingly, Base Station has also brought a fairly complete camping needs.

Starting from the shower, external kitchen, to comfort support devices such as air conditioning, running water, induction stove, and integrated solar panels. The entire electrical system is supported by internal batteries and inverters to power devices inside the trailer.

However, Honda also designed the Base Station to be able to support external resources, if needed. Ambient lighting around the window can be set to create an atmosphere, and at night the brightness level can be increased to help illuminate the camping area.

Honda insists that the Base Station is a continuation of their adventure-oriented product line, ranging from tough trucks and SUVs, ATVs, motorcycles, to side-by-side vehicles. Even so, this project is still in prototype status.

Honda has not announced the price and official launch schedule. However, the manufacturer says the Base Station will be priced competitively in the light trailer segment, with a position between a minimalist teardrop trailer and a conventional camper of a larger size.
