Camera Problem Makes Porsche Recall 173 Thousand Units from Various Models

JAKARTA - In the midst of strategic steps to maintain internal combustion engines (ICE) and delay the expansion of pure electric vehicles, Porsche is actually facing a classic problem with a problematic rear-view camera. The problem forced the German manufacturer to recall 173,538 vehicles in the United States.

The problem is not with the hardware, but with a software glitch that can make the rear camera display fail to appear on the center screen when the lever is moved to reverse gear. This condition has the potential to reduce driver visibility and increase safety risks.

The recall covers a variety of models and types of drive. Details include 77,766 units of the Cayenne model year 2019-2025, 11,044 units of the Cayenne E-Hybrid, 44,128 units of the 911 model year 2020-2025, 34,148 units of the Taycan model year 2020-2025, 5,021 units of the Panamera model year 2025, and 1,431 units of the Panamera Hybrid.

This wide coverage indicates that the problem is cross-product line. The recall document states that Porsche has not yet identified the exact root cause, as reported by Carscoops, Saturday, January 3.

However, the interference is suspected to come from temporary signal interference between the control unit and the surround view camera in certain conditions. Although, it rarely hinders the rear camera view.

Porsche ensures that the solution offered is relatively simple, where repairs are carried out through a software update that is more resistant to signal interference. The new system is also designed to have automatic recovery capabilities, so that the camera can return to working without having to be repeatedly taken to the dealer.

Interestingly, most owners are likely to have not experienced any disruption. The manufacturer will contact affected consumers starting in February to schedule a visit to an official dealer.
