JAKARTA General Motors (GM) announced a major step in the transformation of its car technology. One of them removes support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the upcoming model vehicle lines.
This announcement was made by GM Chief Executive Officer, Mary Barra. GM chose to prioritize its platform for electric vehicles, but this change will eventually spread to all GM portfolios.
"A lot of things depend on when you update the vehicle. Given we have more than 40 models across the portfolio, you don't just do this and everything is updated," Barra told The Verge, quoted Tuesday, October 28.
"We have decided to prioritize our EV vehicles during this period, and over time, we will continue to continue in all portfolios," he continued.
In electric vehicles, General Motors switches to an infotainment system previously called "Ultify". GM states that the removal of Apple CarPlay gives it access to direct integration and the information needed for its electric vehicle line, and the company claims that internal integrated solutions are a better choice for consumers.

The main reason for this decision is so that GM can implement its own centralized infotainment and computing system called the centralized vehicle computing system. This starts from the middle to upper-middle models in 2028, and this system will later be divided into all GM brands such as Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac.
The GM-made system is said to be able to offer a more impressive experience and can integrate the vehicle function in depth. Starting from updating data integration, to developing new generation applications and voice assistants.
However, in a statement to MacRumors, a GM spokesman said that CarPlay and Android Auto will remain available in gasoline-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future. However, confirming that GM will eventually turn to a more integrated experience.
"We are not making any changes to the existing vehicle. If your car supports Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, that support will remain available. Both will remain available in all gasoline-powered GM vehicles for the future," he said in a statement.
"As our progress towards a centralized computing platform, we will gradually turn to a better and more integrated experience, a direction the industry is aiming for widely as vehicles become more software-defined. We appreciate our collaboration with Apple and Google and remain focused on providing the experience customers like," GM statement continued.
