JAKARTA Automotive lovers who look forward to the presence of Maserati MC20 Folgore, the electricity version of the MC20 supercar, may be able to breathe a little easier. Although it was canceled earlier this year because the order was insufficient, Maserati is now hinting that this project could be revived if market conditions allowed.
Initially, the MC20 Folgore was promised to have extraordinary power and driving dynamics similar to its V6 engine version. This model actually has the potential to become the first electric supercar to be sold en masse, distinguishing itself from the 2000-strong hypercars such as Rimac Nevera, Pininfarina Battista, and Lotus Evija.
It was this pioneering status that backfired for MC20 Folgore. The absence of competitors comparable in the market made it difficult for Maserati to determine the benchmark. The company is not sure it can attract enough buyers from alternative V6 and V8 machines to cover large development costs.
Maserati CEO, Santo Ficili, continues to support this postponement decision.
"I don't think this is the right time to bring this type of supercar to electrification," he said during an interview with Autocar, quoted Wednesday, July 30.

However, he added that the MC20 Folgore project was only postponed, not canceled, and this car could still enter the production line as MCPura Folgore.
"We'll see," Ficili said when asked if the company's supercar could be electric. "The project [is over], but we decided to wait to understand what will happen."
Currently, there are no immediate plans to continue development. Ficili emphasized the power of their flagship V6 Nettuno machines, which are currently the heart of MC20 and GranTurismo.
"We have this fantastic [V6] machine that satisfies our customers. We have different types of strength. This is our current engine," he said.
Ficili also admits that she doesn't have the ability to predict to see when the electric supercar market will be fully ready. For him, it is very important to "have customers who are ready to buy a car like this" before further investment is made.
