JAKARTA Mercedes-Benz is taking drastic steps in the United States (US) electric vehicle market (EV). This luxury car manufacturer has not only cut the prices of its EQ model significantly, but also plans to stop EV production in the US. This decision comes before the end of federal EV tax credit on September 30.
In an effort to boost sales of the EQ model described as "lays" because of its shape, Mercedes-Benz was reported by Car and Driver, quoted Monday, July 21, imposed a fairly large price cut for the 2026 model. This price drop varied, starting from 4,150 US dollars (equivalent to Rp67.7 million) for EQS sedans of up to US$15,300 (equivalent to Rp250 million) for the EQS SUV.
Along with price cuts, Mercedes-Benz will stop production of all EQ models marketed in the US (except EQB) starting September 1.
"We are temporarily closing the list of US orders for EQS Sedan, EQS SUV, EQE Sedan, and EQE SUV to align with customer and market requests," a Mercedes-Benz spokesman confirmed to Car and Driver.

Although production for the global market will continue, Mercedes is reluctant to provide a schedule for when the order list for these models will reopen in the US. This creates great uncertainty for consumers and EV markets in America.
The decision is allegedly in response to two main factors: the end of federal EV tax credits accelerated from the end of the year to September 30, as well as Mercedes' struggle to sell its EV units in significant quantities in the US market.
However, Mercedes plans for future EV models, such as the Electric CLA and GLC EV, are still running on schedule. Electric CLA, which is the first vehicle built on the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) architecture, will arrive at US dealers by the end of 2025. In addition, these two new architectural-based SUVs will also be introduced.
