Mercedes-Benz Finally Extends A-Class Production Until 2028

JAKARTA Mercedes-Benz has finally extended A-Class production until 2028, surpassing the original plan that will end the model in 2026.

Autonews reported on Friday, July 18, this decision was taken to meet strong market demand for hybrid-powered compact cars while adjusting more realistic electrification strategies.

A-Class, the Mercedes-Benz entry-level model, remains popular in the premium compact car segment. Sales data shows this model is still in demand, especially in Europe. By maintaining A-Class, Mercedes-Benz answers the needs of consumers who have not fully switched to electric vehicles (EVs), while continuing to develop EV technology for small and medium segments.

Mercedes-Benz plans to refresh the A-Class with improved design and technology. Although details have not been disclosed, these updates are expected to include advanced safety features and a new infotainment system, keeping its competitive against rivals such as the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3. The move also strengthens the A-Class position as an option for young consumers who want luxury in a compact package.

Initially, Mercedes-Benz focused on the full transition to EV for the entry-level model. However, market studies show EV demand is stronger in small and medium segments, prompting companies to maintain gasoline and hybrid options. This decision reflects a pragmatic approach amid the dynamics of the global automotive market that still relies on conventional engines.

The decision to extend the A-Class is also influenced by intense competition in the premium segment. Manufacturers such as Jaguar, Porsche, and Lotus face the challenge of slowing EV demand in the upper class, making the Mercedes-Benz strategy to keep the hybrid model look smart. This allows them to maintain the market share while preparing a new EV platform.

With an extension until 2028, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt, Germany, will continue to produce A-Class with other models such as GLA and GLB. Consumers benefit from more options, especially those who want premium cars at a more affordable price than full EV models such as the newly launched electric CLA Couple.
