JAKARTA The national automotive industry is facing tough challenges. Market pressure has made car sales experience a significant decline, having a direct impact on various supporting sectors, including the vehicle insurance industry.

Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) noted that car sales in the first quarter of 2025 only reached 256,368 units, down 2.9 percent compared to the same period last year. In fact, in April 2025, sales figures fell sharply by 27.8 percent, recording only 51,205 units.

This trend certainly affects the performance of other sectors, one of which is car insurance. The Marketing Retail & Digital Business Director of Astra Insurance, Wisnu Kusumawardhana, admitted that the slowdown in car sales had an impact on their business.

"If car sales go down, vehicle insurance will automatically be affected," said Wisnu at the Media Gathering Garda Oto 30th Anniversary event in the SCBD area, Jakarta, Tuesday, May 27.

However, Wisnu emphasized that the decline in the vehicle insurance sector did not immediately disrupt Astra Insurance's overall performance.

"We still have to be adaptive, by developing and offering other products outside of motorized vehicles," he added.

Even in the midst of this challenging situation, Astra's flagship vehicle insurance product, Garda Oto, still recorded an impressive performance. Garda Oto still holds the top position in the market, with an 18 percent market share, making it the largest among around 70 insurance companies operating in Indonesia.

"We are still number one for vehicle insurance," said Wisnu proudly.

Entering its 30th age on June 1, Garda Oto also proves its ability to continue to innovate and be relevant in various eras. One of its latest breakthroughs is the launch of the Virtual Survey service, a digital feature in the myGarda application that allows customers to conduct online vehicle surveys via video calls with surveyors.

According to its tagline, Claim from Anywhere, this feature is designed to answer customer needs in the post-pandemic era, where efficiency and flexibility are the main keys.

"Customers can now survey vehicles from anywhere, without having to come directly. Everything is enough through the application," explained Vishnu.

This step further strengthens Garda Oto's position as a pioneer of innovation in the vehicle insurance industry, as well as reinforces Astra Insurance's commitment to providing solutions that match current needs.
