MotoGP Wants to Imitate Football on the Transfer Market for Drivers

MotoGP is considering a certain period for the transfer market for drivers (doc. MotoGP).

JAKARTA - MotoGP is rumored to be considering the implementation of a rider transfer market system as in football. This idea emerged to prevent the dynamics of the rider market from overshadowing the competition on the track for too long.

Most of the rider's deals for the 2027 MotoGP have actually been reached before the 2026 season begins. A number of transfers are rumored to have occurred since January 2026 even though the announcement was only made a few months later.

Former MotoGP rider, Cal Crutchlow, previously assessed that the current rider market conditions feel boring because the direction of the transfer is usually known long before it is officially announced.

"The rider market is actually quite boring because everyone already knows where they are going to move three months or even six months before the official announcement is made," said Crutchlow, quoted by Crash.

The situation is inseparable from the deadlock in negotiations between MotoGP and manufacturers regarding a new deal for a five-year period starting in 2027. This condition makes a number of agreements that have been reached only announced to the public in the summer.

With the seats of the Manufacturer team and most of the Satellite teams still being the target, the rider exchange for the 2027 season is expected to be fierce. This movement has the potential to become one of the biggest stories of MotoGP even before the 2026 season ends.

Motorsport reported that the situation made MotoGP discuss the possibility of implementing a special transfer window for riders similar to the transfer market of football players. So, the concept is that transfers can only be made during a certain period.

Thus, agreements made outside the transfer window period will not be considered valid. However, the rule is likely to have a number of exceptions, one of which is for drivers who are promoted from a lower category.

"The problem is, in the racing world, I don't think this can ever be changed. The situation is not exactly like in football, where someone can be at one manufacturer during the day, then sign a contract with another party at night," said Crutchlow.

The MotoGP manufacturers are said to still be divided about the idea. Some see the potential to make the competition more focused on action on the track, while others assess the characteristics of motorcycle racing are different from football so that the implementation of the system is not simple.

The transfer window and deadline for transfers are indeed part of a number of sports. However, motorsport has a different mechanism because decisions regarding driver contracts are often influenced by performance, motor development, relationships with teams, and the direction of the manufacturer's project.

If applied in 2026, for example, a transfer window that coincides with the summer break can have a big impact on the line-up for the following season. Decisions in that period could determine the composition of the 2027 MotoGP grid.

Apart from performance on the track, riders also consider various other factors when determining their future. Fabio Quartararo is one example after deciding to join Honda in 2027.

Communication with Honda Racing Corporation during the winter and information about the project being built were important factors in the French rider's decision. So, race results are not the only consideration in determining a rider's future.
