Indonesia vs Vietnam: Garuda was silenced 0-3 in the 2026 ASEAN Championship

JAKARTA - The Indonesian national team will host Vietnam in the third match of Group A of the ASEAN Championship at Pakansari Stadium, Bogor Regency, on Monday, August 3, 2026. The Garuda squad had to fall behind 0-2 in the first half.

Vietnam's two first-half goals were scored by Nguyen Van Vi in the sixth minute and Nguyen Hai Long in the 15th minute.

The visiting team opened the early advantage through an attack scheme from the right side of the Indonesian National Team defense. Nguyen Hai Long started the attack before the ball was passed to Nguyen Van Vi.

Van Vi, who stood without direct control, fired a left foot shot that was not anticipated by goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata. The ball slid into the near post which made Nadeo startled and changed the score to 1-0 for Vietnam.

The opponent's counterattack scheme seems to be a nightmare for the Garuda Squad. Vietnam then added to the lead through a quick counterattack in the 15th minute.

Starting from a long pass in the Golden Star's defense, the ball went to Nguyen Hai Long who was unaccompanied. Hai Long missed the goal and made a calm finish with a horizontal shot to the near post.

Behind 0-2 made the Indonesian National Team react. John Herdman's team immediately dominated the ball to find the opening goal.

However, various efforts made by the Garuda Squad failed to bear fruit. Until halftime, Vietnam maintained a 2-0 lead.

Continuing into the second half, the Indonesian National Team again dominated possession from the start. A number of substitutions were also made by John Herdman to add power to catch up.

Beckham Putra, Tim Geypens, and Jens Raven were included. However, Vietnam's solid defense made it difficult for the Garuda Squad to create opportunities. The Indonesian national team often has difficulty penetrating Vietnam's penalty box.

Instead of scoring the opening goal, disaster came again for the Indonesian National Team. Nguyen Xuan Son, who just entered in the 63rd minute, scored Vietnam's third goal.

The Garuda Squad's fragile defense - which is easily punished with a counterattack scheme - became the cause. Nguyen Hoang Duc gave a pass to Xuan Son who stood free without escort.

He immediately ran to the penalty box and completed the attack with a precise ball placement to deceive Nadeo.

After falling behind by three goals, the Indonesian national team became more frustrated. It can be said that only Rizky Eka Pratama's opportunity in the 88th minute was considered golden in the second half.
