JAKARTA - The government ensures that there is no new venue development for the 2028 XXII PON in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) as well as DKI Jakarta as a buffer province due to budget efficiency.

The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, again emphasized this efficiency when handing over the Decree (SK) on the determination of the host to the regional heads as hosts of the four-year event at the Graha Kemenpora Building, Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

"Later we will help whether the venues need to be repaired, not built, because the message from the President is that there is no venue development because this must be an efficient budget," said Erick after the meeting with the media.

The handover of the SK also marked the Central Government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports officially collaborating with the West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and DKI Jakarta Provincial Governments in the organization of the XXII National Sports Week (PON) 2028.

Erick said that the collaboration was carried out early to strengthen consolidation and anticipate budget and governance issues that often arise after the implementation of the largest national multi-branch sports festival.

"We want to ensure that this PON runs well. Not only the implementation, but also administratively. Besides that, of course we want to ensure that the President's directives are also implemented," he said.

In addition to emphasizing efficiency, Erick also ensures that the 2028 PON must compete in 21 priority sports branches in the National Sports Master Plan (DBON) to maintain the continuity of achievements to the international level.

So far, there are a total of 67 sports branches (cabor) that have been included in the provisional list to be competed in the 2028 PON. However, this number can still change to match the direction of government policy and budget capacity.

"It can change. Can it change because it has to match the blueprint that the President wants or not? With the existence of DBON, then don't let the number later be competed in the Olympics be lost," said Erick.

NTT and NTB will be the main locations for the matches and Jakarta will play a supporting role in the implementation through the provision of supporting facilities. However, there are no exact details of which sports will be contested in each region.

The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, said that Jakarta is ready to help the two regions to make PON 2028 a success because of the readiness of sports facilities and supporting transportation owned by the region.

"In Jakarta, there are 36 venues owned by the Central Government, most of which are in the GBK Complex (Gelora Bung Karno). It is in good condition and ready to be used. There are also 220 managed by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in five cities are also in good condition and ready to be used," said Pramono.

The NTB government also expressed its readiness for accommodation, mapping the location of matches in all districts and cities, as well as the support of sports medical teams from the RSUP who have bagged international certification from Dorna based on experience in holding global events.

"The sooner this SK comes out, the longer the preparation time. Thank you Mr. Minister, the SK has finally come out. Thank you also to the Governor of DKI Jakarta, who has agreed to be a backup mechanism for the implementation of the 2028 PON," said the NTB Governor, Lalu Muhamad Iqbal.

The NTT Provincial Government also welcomed the issuance of the SK determination which coincided with the discussion of the regional budget. NTT has prepared a budget allocation of Rp. 250 billion in stages until 2028.

NTT Governor, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, said that the location of the match in NTT was planned to be spread across 14 regencies and cities near tourist destinations, outside Labuan Bajo, to encourage economic and tourism impacts.

"So, we really make sure that everything is safe and of course for us, in NTT and NTB, hopefully also successful tourism and successful economy. Of course this PON, besides DKI Jakarta, the economic impact is also big for NTT and NTB," he said.
