JAKARTA - The Indonesian Bouldering Federation (FPTI) has decided to send as many as eight athletes to compete in the 2026 Madrid World Climbing Series which will take place this week.
The tournament was held on May 28-31, 2026 in Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain. The national cliff climbing parent also lowered the speed athletes from the two categories that were contested, consisting of four female athletes and four male athletes.
"The Indonesian Climbing Team is ready to fight in the World Climbing Series Madrid 2026. This series will compete in two disciplines, namely boulder and speed," wrote FPTI in a statement on their official Instagram account.
From the women's speed, the names sent by FPTI to compete are Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi, Kadek Adi Asih, Rajiah Sallsabillah, and Berthdigna Devi Surya Kusuma.
As for the men's sector, the names on the list are the 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalists, Veddriq Leonardo, Raharjati Nursamsa, Antasyafi Robby Al Hilmi, and Aditya Tri Syahria.
The appearance in Madrid is an important momentum for the Indonesian rock climbing team to rise after the unsatisfactory results achieved by Desak and his friends at the 2026 Wujiang World Climbing Series in China.
At that time, Desak Made emerged as the only athlete who managed to bring home a medal. The Indonesian mainstay female speed athlete bagged a bronze medal after defeating Natalia Kalucka (Poland) in the bronze medal match (small final).
While in Wujiang, FPTI decided to reduce nine speed athletes (five men and four women) and four leads (two women and two men). Unfortunately, athletes from the men's sector could not speak much in the arena.
In the final round, Raharjati Nursamsa immediately met with fellow countryman Kiromal Katibin in the 16th round. Both athletes showed fierce competition and Raharjati managed to advance to the next stage.
Unfortunately, Raharjati's step stopped in the last eight when facing Long Jianguo from China. He fell after slipping near the finish line.
A similar fate befell Veddriq Leonardo. He managed to advance to the last eight after defeating Hryhorii Ilchyshyn from Ukraine, but instead fell when he was close to the finish line when facing Samuel Watson from the United States.
Meanwhile, Aditya Tri Syahria's steps must stop in the 16th round after failing to beat Aphiwit Limpanichpakdee from Thailand. Aditya had lost momentum and almost slipped near the finish line.
