This Is What Virgil Van Dijk Said About Liverpool's Defeat To Brentford

JAKARTA - Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk admitted that a 2-3 defeat to Brentford in the 9th week of the 2025/2026 Premier League at the Gtech Community Stadium, Sunday WIB, was difficult to accept.

This defeat was Liverpool's fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League after being defeated by Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United with a score of 1-2.

"It was just a very disappointing night for us. It's hard to accept but that's the truth and we have to keep going," said the footballer who is also the captain of the Dutch national team, quoted from the club's official website on Sunday.

This was a crushing blow to Liverpool after they had previously ended the difficult period of a streak of four consecutive defeats in all competitions with a convincing 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

When asked if this defeat was a setback after that big win, he said, "Obviously this is one of the hard to accept, we cannot deny that. This is not an easy moment".

Van Dijk later admitted that it was "hard to say" that Liverpool had failed to keep the sheet clear in the last nine games. Of the nine matches, the Reds conceded 15 goals.

According to Van Dijk, this Liverpool shortage is a form of a picture of the team's collective performance and not just himself and his other colleagues on the back.

"So it's easy to blame someone or backline or dead balls, but this is all a collective thing at the end. Everyone has to look at the mirror, including myself. That's what we all do and that's what we all discuss too. I'm sure we'll get out of this," said the 34-year-old centre-back.

This defeat made Liverpool even more down in the standings, after they were in sixth place with 15 points. In the next match, they will play the 2025/2026 League Cup fourth round match against Crystal Palace on Thursday (30/10) at Anfield.

"We have to shift our mindset immediately so they are ready, because they will come to Anfield to try to hurt us even more," said Van Dijk about Palace, a team that has already given two defeats to his team this season.
