Guardiola Frustration Manchester City Can't Beat Monaco In The Champions League

JAKARTA - Pep Guardiola could not hide his frustration after Manchester City only drew 2-2 against AS Monaco in the second match of the 2025/2026 Champions League at Stade Louis II, Thursday, October 2, 2025, early morning WIB.

Erling Haaland opened the Citizens' lead in the 15th minute, before Jordan Teze equalized three minutes later.

Haaland scored again in the 44th minute, but when Nico Gonzalez was deemed to have fouled the penalty box for lifting his leg too high after VAR intervention, Eric Dier managed to execute a penalty to force a point for both teams.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was reluctant to comment on the penalty.

"No. I have no comment on the Spanish referee," he said after the match.

There was an unpleasant incident when the referee tried to watch the replay. Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma ran to the bench to talk to his coach before the penalty kick, but he took the ball and the Monaco players chased him.

In the commotion that occurred, at least one Monaco coach was sent off, with Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva getting a yellow card.

However, Guardiola's biggest frustration was his team's inability to beat Monaco.

"In football, you have to win with this result. If you analyze the game, there are a lot of really good things."

"One step by one we will be better, but we have a lot of chances. Phil (Foden) in the first half and a lot of players played very well."

"We barely conceded. We created chances, they defended very deeply and tightly, so it was unexpected by their way of playing."

"However, we adjusted and played very well. During a tight match, you have to defend and we take points," said Guardiola.

Guardiola's frustration was not without reason. His team was able to control the ball as much as 72 percent and fired 18 shots, six of which were on target.

Despite being very dominating, The Citizens struggled to win against the hosts who only fired eight shots, three of whom were on target.

With the addition of one point, Manchester City is now in eighth place in the Champions League preliminary phase standings this season with four points from two matches.
