SEA Games 2025 Target Waits For Budget Certainty

JAKARTA The determination of the medal target for Indonesia at the 2025 SEA Games multi-pronged sports event in Thailand at the end of the year is still waiting for budget certainty.

The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, ensured that currently the new budget is available at IDR 10 billion, which will accommodate only approximately 120 athletes.

"(Determination of the medal target), yes, we have to wait for the budget first," said Erick Thohir in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

The budget issue and reduction in match numbers carried out by the host Thailand made Indonesia have the potential to lose many gold medals.

In total there are 41 match numbers reduced by the organizers, which will automatically have an impact on Indonesia's medal.

Menpora mengatakan bahwa untuk bisa mempertahankan rata-rata peringkat ketiga yang didapat Indonesia dalam klasemen akhir perolehan medali, maka membutuhkan 80-an medali.

"If you want to rank in the top three, yes, you have to get 85-90 gold medals. That is the reality so it must be calculated first," he said.

The 2025 SEA Games will take place on 9-20 December 2025. This biennial multi-pronged sporting event will be held in three major cities, namely Bangkok, Chonburi, and Songkhla.

In total there are 50 sports and 574 match numbers contested. There are approximately more than 12 thousand athletes participating in the 2025 SEA Games.
