JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the Sumatra Zone of the Perbasi DPP Ronni Yenes said that the federation targets at least five cities on the island of Sumatra to focus on coaching athletes, so that it can support the development of these sports nationally in the future.

He explained that one of Perbasi's road maps in the future is to increase new sustainable coaching centers and increase the number of tiered tournaments.

"We don't want coaching and tournaments to only focus on Medan City, so that in the future other areas, such as Pekanbaru, Jambi, Padang, and Palembang, will be at least five major cities in Sumatra," said Ronni when interviewed in Jakarta, Friday (5/9).

According to him, currently, the basketball tournament in Sumatra is still centered in Medan, North Sumatra. In fact, many other areas have great potential to develop the sport.

He explained that organizing national and international-scale tournaments had a big impact in fostering the spirit of the community, regional administrators, and local governments to support the development of athletes.

If this is consistently done, then all stakeholders will be enthusiastic about helping the federation to build the sports ecosystem.

Ronni stated that basketball coaching in Sumatra, both in the 5x5 and 3x3 categories, currently shows a positive growth trend in many regions. However, the main challenge of growing the number of enthusiasts is the lack of competitive opportunities.

"They keep training, but there are no tournaments, so the potential comes out to the maximum which must be held an intense tournament," he said.

He emphasized that equitable tournaments in various cities in Sumatra will be a strategic step to produce potential athletes who can make Indonesia proud in the future.

In addition, there are many effects that can be obtained, ranging from campaigning for a healthy lifestyle through sports, to economic growth involving many business actors.

Ronni emphasized that Perbasi will not be able to walk alone to campaign for basketball.

He further emphasized that organizing a tournament that only relies on a single budget from the Perbasi DPP will not be enough to realize the work plan. It takes collaboration to budget costs for activities from many parties.

Therefore, the role of local governments, Perbasi provincial administrators, and the private sector is very important and is needed in encouraging the development of basketball in the future.

For regional zones such as Sulawesi and others, they also do the same thing to develop coaching and increase the number of tournaments with national standards and int.
