Son Heung-min Finally Officially Joins LAFC In An Agreement That Breaks MLS Record

JAKARTA - LAFC confirmed on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, local time that Tottenham Hotspur legend Son Heung-min has completed his move to MLS (Major League Soccer).

ESPN reports that the deal is worth around USD 26 million (IDR 424 billion), a record for MLS.

This figure broke the record 22 million US dollars (Rp358 billion) spent by Atlanta United FC last winter to recruit striker Emmanuel Latte Lath.

In fact, Son's contract at Tottenham will expire in the summer of 2026. However, he decided to cooperate early.

He is now getting his new contract at LAFC--where he will be a Designated Player--which is valid until 2027 and has an option of extending until 2029.

Son's last appearance for Spurs came in a friendly match against Newcastle in his home country, South Korea, on Sunday, August 3, 2025, one day after he announced his intention to end his 10 years of togetherness with the Premier League club.

Meanwhile Son's last competitive appearance for Spurs came as Spurs beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao, Spain, May 2025.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a brilliant decade in north London, scoring 173 goals and making 101 assists in 454 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He formed a tough duet with Spurs' all-time top scorer Harry Kane-both holding record the most goalscoupled goals between the two players in Premier League history - before the England captain moved to Bayern Munich in 2023.

With the departure of his longtime teammate, Son became Spurs' new mandate. He was later appointed captain by former head coach Ange Postecoglou after Hugo Lloris moved to MLS.

Son and Lloris will return to play together at LAFC.

LAFC are in sixth place in the MLS Western Region even though they still have at least two games left over from the teams above them in the standings.
