Macau Open 2025: Alwi Farhan Defeats Second Seed to Reach Final

JAKARTA – Men's singles badminton player Alwi Farhan reached his first final of the year at the 2025 Macau Open after defeating second seed Lakshya Sen.

Alwi secured Indonesia's first final with a straight-sets victory of 21-16, 21-9 at the Macau East Asian Games Dome on Saturday, August 2, 2025. This first competitive victory over the Indian men's singles player went very smoothly. Alwi, the 2023 world junior champion, dominated in both games.

Although slow to react early in the first game, Alwi recovered and played flawlessly. After his opponent took a 3-0 lead, he immediately responded with four consecutive points to take the lead.

Sen then equalized, but Alwi immediately answered with two points. After that, the score remained close, but Alwi maintained his lead until the end.

Then in the second game, the score was tied twice early on, at 2-2 and 4-4. However, Alwi's four consecutive points after that managed to quell Sen's play.

In the final, Alwi will face Justin Hoh of Malaysia. Justin himself advanced to the final match thanks to a rubber-set victory over Tharun Mannepalli, also from India.

Indonesia had four representatives in the men's singles tournament, but three others failed in the second round. They were Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, Yohanes Saut Marcellyno, and Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah.

Before Alwi's victory, Indonesia had already lost the women's doubles pair Meilysa Trias Puspitasari and Rachel Allessya Rose. The pair's journey was ended by Di Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En Tzu of Chinese Taipei.
