Indonesia U-23 National Team Coach Admits Brunei's Power Blind: Focus On Your Own Team

JAKARTA - The U-23 Indonesian National Team (Timnas) coach, Gerald Vanenburg, admitted that he did not know Brunei Darussalam's strength. Nevertheless, he remains focused on escorting the team to give the best performance.

"I don't really know about Brunei. I focus on my own team and hopefully we can play well," Gerard Vanenburg said in Jakarta quoted Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The U-23 Indonesian national team will meet Brunei Darussalam in the opening match of the U-23 AFF Cup at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Tuesday, July 15, 2025, WIB night.

On this agenda, the U-23 Indonesian national team entered Group A which was filled by Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and the Philippines.

On the other hand, Vanenburg also said that other factors outside the team such as field conditions had also been very supportive for his team's performance.

"I think the field is ready because they (managers) are indeed preparing it well," he said.

Meanwhile, the coach of the Malaysian national team, Mohamad Nafuzi Zaini, was enthusiastic about being able to return to the same chart with Indonesia in Group A of the AFF U-23 Cup.

Nafuzi emphasized that he would give his best performance against the hosts.

"So, I want to put up a good fight," said Nafuzi.

As is known, the championship was held in Indonesia, making the atmosphere provided by Red-White supporters will have sufficient impact on the appearance of their foster children.

Even so, Nafuzi hopes that the players can give maximum results not only when they meet Indonesia, but also competing with the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam.

"I just want the players to present the best. I respect the Philippines and Brunei," he said.

Later the match between the Malayan vs Garuda Muda Tigers will be presented in the closing match of Group A of the U-23 AFF Cup on Monday, July 21, 2025.
