JAKARTA - Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, now also known as the promoter, said cruiserweight boxer (90.7 kg) Jake Paul had a real chance to become the next world champion.

"He (Jake Paul) has a real chance to win the world title," Oscar De La Hoya said on the Boxing News youtube channel, reported by ANTARA, Saturday, July 5.

Paul returned to the ring on Sunday 29 June WIB beating former middleweight world champion of the Mexican World Boxing Council (WBC) Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, at the Honda Center, Anaheim, California.

It was the 28-year-old's first appearance in the ring since he beat 59-year-old heavyweight legend Mike Tyson in a controversial battle at AT&T Stadium, Texas, in November 2024.

Victory over Chavez officially earned Paul a legitimate cruiserweight world rating, after earlier this week it was revealed that the Problem Child was ranked 14th in the World Boxing Association (WBA).

De La Hoya praised Paul, who believes that the controversial boxer from the United States has a huge opportunity to become a world champion.

The "Golden Boy" then talked about Paul's genius promotional strategy.

"I think Jake Paul is so genius in captivating Canelo to getting Canelo to talk about Jake Paul, so it was a genius move from him," he said.

He said Paul took the right steps for his career and he believed Paul was serious about boxing for the first time.

Paul is said to be targeting a fight with United cruiserweight world champion Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez, who currently holds the WBA title and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) in the cruiserweight.
