Successfully Passing Medical Trials, Florian Wirtz Officially Becomes The Most Expensive Player Of The English Premier League

JAKARTA - Germany's talented young attacking midfielder, Florian Wirtz, officially joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen after successfully passing a medical test and agreeing to personal requirements, Friday, June 20, British time.

Wirtz is a crucial part of the Bayer Leverkusen squad that won the Bundesliga title in 2024. Then he became the target of many European giant clubs such as Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Real Madrid, finally choosing Anfield as the next port. He has now signed a five-year contract.

The arrival of Wirtz officially shifted Darwin Nunez's purchase as Liverpool's most expensive purchase of all time. Previously, the record was held by Virgil van Dijk (75 million) and Darwin Nunez himself (85 million pounds). It is known, Wirtz has an overall transfer value of 116 million pounds, equivalent to Rp. 2.56 trillion, according to today's exchange rate, making it the most expensive purchase in Premier League history.

The previous record for the most expensive transfer was the transfer of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea in 2023 which reached 115 million.

"I feel very happy and very proud. Finally this is over and I have waited a long time, finally finished and I am very happy," he said, after signing the contract, reported by The Independent, Saturday, June 21.

"I am very happy for a new adventure in front of me. This is also a big point from my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, get out of the Bundesliga and join the Premier League," he continued.

Wirtz's move also shows Liverpool's big ambition in this summer's transfer market. He became the second signing from Bayer Leverkusen after Jeremie Frimpong was brought in for 29.4 million pounds. Not only that, Liverpool are also reportedly getting closer to getting a third signing, with Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez being a potential target.
