JAKARTA - The Australian Tax Office (ATO) has applied for former Rafael Struick club, Brisbane Roar, to be liquidated because it is in large debt.

The Australian League A club is owned by an Indonesian company, Bakrie Group. This club already has several well-known coaches, such as Ange Postecoglou, who is now Tottenham Hotspur coach.

Last year, the club recruited Indonesian National Team striker Rafael Struick from Dutch club Ado Den Hague. However, Rafael was officially released on Tuesday, May 27.

The club's management insists their future is safe even though the club is in a six-digit unpaid debt.

Based on AFR's report on Friday, May 31, CEO of Brisbane Roar Kaz Patafta is currently in Indonesia to meet with club owner Bakrie Group.

"The club has been working with ATO on this issue for some time and has plans to resolve it immediately," Patafta said, citing antara.

Patafta said the debt existed before the current club management consisting of him and the head of the Zac Anderson operations office took over the A-League club in July 2023.

The report also states that the Bakrie Group has committed to paying the debt as early as next week.

The Australian Professional League, which manages the A-League, has been informed of the matter and believes Brisbane Roar will address the matter.

However, Queensland Sports Minister Tim Mander said on Friday he was worried about the club's condition.

"We want them to stay healthy. They have had a bit of trouble in recent years. I watched one of their matches about a month ago and it was an amazing experience," he said.

Brisbane Roar himself finished 12th out of 13 clubs with 21 points. Fortunately, the Australian League does not use a relegation and promotional system.
