Marcus Rashford's Saga Ends, Officially Joins Aston Villa On The Last Day Of The Exchange

JAKARTA - Marcus Rashford has joined Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season, ending the story about the future of the England international.

The deal includes options to make the transfer permanent. Villa have agreed to bear most of Rashford's salary and other performance-related bonuses have been included in the deal.

If Villa doesn't take the option, Rashford is expected to return to Old Trafford in the summer.

"I would like to thank Manchester United and Aston Villa for making this loan deal come true," Rashford wrote in an Instagram post after the move.

"I was lucky because some clubs approached me, but Aston Villa was an easy decision."

"I really admire the way Aston Villa played this season and the manager's ambitions. I just want to play football and excited to get started."

"I wish everyone at Manchester United the rest of the season," Rashford said on Monday, February 3, 2025.

Rashford has not appeared for Manchester United since Europa League's win over Viktoria Plzen on December 12, 2024 amid head coach Ruben Amorim's concerns about the player's implementation in training.

After Manchester United's win over Fulham 1-0 on January 26, 2025, Amorim said he prefers 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital to Rashford after concerns about the 27-year-old's standards.

Rashford said he was ready for a new challenge after he was expelled from Manchester United's squad since the derby against Manchester City on December 15, 2024.

"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Marcus all the best for the rest of the season," the 13-time Premier League champions said in a statement.

Villa are looking for options to strengthen their attack line after agreeing to Jhon Duran's exit to Al Nassr in the Saudi Arabian Pro League on January 31, 2025.

Aston Villa coach Unai Emery can rely on Rashford's experience for the second half of the season once they reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Rashford's departure, although temporarily, seems to end his 20-year relationship with Manchester United after he graduated from the club's academy and entered the first team at the age of 18.

Meanwhile, Rashford's first preference was to move to Barcelona. However, the La Liga team's financial constraints made the deal complicated.

Borussia Dortmund also expressed interest in Rashford, but his salary of around 350,000 per week proved to be a big obstacle.

Rashford scored 30 goals in the 2022/2023 season, the most productive season of his career, but has not reached that level since then. He has scored seven goals in all competitions this season with the Red Devils.

In total, Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United. He has won Europa League, two FA Cups, and two Carabao Cups during his time at Old Trafford.

He has also scored 17 goals for the England National Team. He has played in two World Cups and two Euros for his country.

Rashford is best known for his out-of-field work during the COVID-19 pandemic when his lobby caused the UK Government to agree to continue funding food for students from low-income households following the initial refusal.
