JAKARTA - Brisbane in Australia was chosen as the partner of choice to start talks for the chairmanship of the 2032 Olympics.

This is the first step towards being appointed to host the Olympics, leading Reuters to call the city a strong contender for hosting that year's edition of the Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach said the IOC had approved the recommendations of the commission responsible for hosting the upcoming Olympics.

"The commission recommends that the IOC Executive Board hold a targeted dialogue with Brisbane 2032. The Executive Council has unanimously approved this recommendation," Bach told a virtual press conference.

A number of cities and countries have publicly expressed interest in hosting the 2032 Olympics including Brisbane, Indonesia, Budapest, China, Doha and Germany's Ruhr Valley.

In 2019, the IOC overhauled the rules for applications to host the Olympics to reduce costs and simplify the Olympic planning process for potential host cities.

No official candidate town is campaigning ahead of the vote as has happened in the past.
